Lyrics
speed kills coming down the mountain
speed kills coming down the street
speed kills with presence of mind and
speed kills if you know what i mean
got to feel – woke up inside again
got to feel less broke more fixed
got to feel when i got outside myself
got to feel when i touched your lips
the things we do to the people that we love
the way we break if there’s something we can’t take
destroy the world that we took so long to make
we expect her gone for some time
i wish her safe from harm
to find yourself in a foreign land
another refugee outsider refugee
how’s it feel she’s coming up roses
how’s it feel she’s coming up sweet
how’s it feel when it’s all in spite of you
how’s it feel when she’s out of your reach
the things we do to the people that we love
the way we break if there’s something in the way
destroy the world that we took so long to make
we expect her gone for some time
i wish her safe from harm
to find yourself in a foreign land
another refugee outsider refugee
what happened to you
what happened to you
what happened to you
what happened to you
About The Song
wtf does that word mean?:
refugee [n.] a person who flees to a foreign country or power to escape danger or persecution
Band Thoughts:
Robin: “That started with a guitar riff, and the guitar riff basically became the rhythm of the song. We were quite excited by it, and we had another chorus, and we didn’t need it. We had enough song.”
Gavin: “That one is about how you can be the most destructive to the people you love. Maybe in life you send a representative of yourself in most situations, social situations and all that. Maybe with the people you love you are at your most real, and sometimes that real can turn a bit aggressive sometimes. We all do it don’t we? But we take it back!”
“They have this great slogan on the back of their shirts (referencing to the D.A. Pennebaker film The War Room, the scene in which Clinton and Gore fight George Bush Sr. for the presidency): ‘Speed Killed Bush,’…I liked the phrase so much that I started using it in that song. But as an album title, it’s too aggressive ‘I didn’t want ‘kills’ in the title.”- Gavin
“I was watching D.A. Pennebaker’s amazing documentary ‘The War Room,’ which is about the Clinton/Gore campaign battling George Bush,……On the back of their shirts they had the slogan ’speed kills.’ I just loved the idea of killing with the speed of thought. Not just traffic. I like the idea of being powerfully whippetlike with your brain.”- Gavin
“There’s this collage of family stuff and relationship moments……One line goes, ‘Can you tell she’s coming up roses, can you tell she’s coming up sweet.’ That’s about kids who are raised by single parents and the other parent doesn’t even know his or her child.”- Gavin
“Sometimes the worst things we can do is to treat the people we love the worst.”- Gavin
“We just felt that it was an inappropriate collection of words at this point despite the fact that it’s got nothing to do with war and nothing to do with aggression — it was the speed of thought. But just the word ‘kills’ didn’t seem the best word to use.”- Gavin
“There was no warisms intended.”- Gavin
“On the single Speed Kills, that riff stuff is mine…” -Gavin
“What happened was the terriost attacks. We felt in the light of such a terrible time that ‘Speed Kills’ was a bad title. ‘Speed Kills’ is a snappier title, but it wasn’t right anymore.”- Gavin
Staff Thoughts:
“This is perhaps the best song off GS, and a fitting first single. You can just kick back and rock out. I love it!”- Brandyn
“What is wrong with original title? They should have just told everyone to kiss their ass I’m not changing it. It probably would have gotten the album more attention. The song itself isn’t offensive, so I think everyone could have dealt. It is one of the best songs on this album. I like the way they’re just ripping through the melodies.”-Laura
