Letting The Cables Sleep

Lyrics

you in the dark
you in the pain
you on the run
living a hell
living your ghost
living your end
never seem to get in the place that I belong
don’t wanna lose the time
lose the time to come

whatever you say it’s alright
whatever you do it’s all good
whatever you say it’s alright
silence is not the way
we need to talk about it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

you in the sea
on a decline
breaking the waves
watching the lights go down
letting the cables sleep

whatever you say it’s alright
whatever you do it’s all good
whatever you say it’s alright

silence is not the way
we need to talk about it
If heaven is on the way
we’ll wrap the world around it
If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way

i’m a stranger in this town
i’m a stranger in this town
i’m a stranger in this town

If heaven is on the way
If heaven is on the way
i’m stranger in this town
i’m a stranger in this town

About The Song

Band Thoughts:

“It’s about a very close friend of mine who discovered he was HIV positive. And it was very hard for him to tell us as friends about that. The communication”.- Gavin

“And obviously living in Ireland, that’s all that the ‘breaking the waves’ stuff, and ‘watching the lights go down, letting the cables sleep’, well, everyone needs rest, needs a place where they can just be themselves. It was a real gift that I thought of that image. Where I was living up on that hill, before i ha arrived the power had been out for two weeks because of these mas storms, so they actually had people in the village come and dig a trench up the hill to put all the power cables in. Letting the cables sleep.. that’s my favourite image on the whole record., and the lyrics I like the most.”- Gavin

‘A really close friend of mine discovered that he was HIV-positive, and he didn’t tell any of us for about six months, he lived with the shame and the stigma of it, as terrified as you could possibly feel about anything. When I found out, I felt so bad because I should have been there for him. So I wrote this song about silence. He’s given me permission to talk about it, because to me the best part of that song it that I can destigmatize it. It’s not a disease of the unclean, it’s a disease that can happen to anyone. Certainly, I’ve been there, and I think every kind of person has been in a situation where they could have been infected. Nobody is perfect, and if you think you could never be exposed to it, you’re lying to yourself. he was just really, really unfortunate. So that’s what the song is about, but it’s mostly about the need for communication.’ – Gavin

“The best one I’ve got is a Maestro Filter Sample Hold which I used on ‘The Chemicals Between Us’ and ‘Letting the Cables Sleep’. It gives you an octave above and an octave below, so you can get some wicked sounds.”- Nigel

“A friend of mine discovered he was HIV positive, and he didn’t tell me for six months, and when I found out from him, I thought how sad it was that he hadn’t spoken about it, hadn’t discussed it with me. It made me think about how many times I haven’t communicated in my life. Overall, it really is about communication.”-Gavin

Staff Thoughts:

“This song is stunning. Seriously good stuff. One of Bush’s best ballads, and surprisingly a commercial hit as well.”- Brandyn

“I liked the song when I got the album. But after one concert when gavin gave a quick meaning before singing. That changed my whole perspective. It just made the song that much better. I think it really takes someone special to write a song like this. I also believe that it’s highly underated. As far as the video goes, it sucked! Not because gavin’s making out with someone (if you know me you know I could care less), but because it competely washes out the meaning. They took something powerful & turn it into soft porn.”-Laura
